All that in mind, he sounds like a piece of work since he jumped to derogatory slurs, especially that quickly. Those have been waiting on his tongue.

Willing to be a veteran is not a veteran. I don’t mind that he wants to talk about veterans’ issues. He’s that asshole when he threatened OP and called him derogatory slurs. I also think his parents are assholes for supporting his insecurities. I can’t speak for all veterans but for me, the keyword is served. I served my country proudly for 11 years. It would irk me too if some kid that didn’t make it out of basic started lecturing other people about service. Veteran here. I’d use the word insecure. As stated above, he was willing to serve so he feels insecure about not being able to.
