I have a casual friend from high school this happened to. And he was heartbroken he couldn’t serve- it was his dream for 10 years, but the type of training he went through (I don’t know specifics but it was very specialized) ended up damaging his back permanently. He’s never once claimed to be a veteran. He’s posted his story. And his disappointment. But also his immense pride in others for being able to serve. Side note- he’s Awesome Festive Af Ugly Christmas Sweater Shirts happily married now with a kid on the way and went into car mechanics. One exception to that is the guy who got injured playing football for a military academy and used his “Disabled Veteran” status for special business grants. I don’t like him. my ex went to u.s. naval academy and got booted a year before graduation because of a medical issue that was unrelated to his time there – last I heard his tinder bio says he’s a disabled veteran. I really have to stop myself from rolling my eyes just thinking about it.
